People love the Ramones t-shirts because they look cool. The Ramone presidential seal t-shirt is one of the most popular Ramones t-shirts of all time. The reason.... because it looks cool! That particular Ramones logo of the presidential seal is one of the most recoginzable band t-shirt logos of all time. That's why I thought it was pretty awesome when I recently read the history of the Ramones presidential seal logo.
When a band becomes as famous as the Ramones, you see a ton of Ramones merchandise everywhere. It's fun to remind yourself that they were just a bunch of grungy teenagers playing in a club and skipping school just like you were! It's funny to think that an image that has been printed on 1000's of Ramones t-shirts was created by a friend of the band because he let the Ramones do some couch surfing on in his New York apartment. The Ramones presidential seal was created by Arturo Vega, a friend of Joey and Dee Dee Ramone. The original seal that is shown on Ramones t-shirts is an eagle holding a branch from an apple tree and a baseball bat. When asked why the Ramones seal included these items, Vega said it was because the Ramones were the definition of an all American band. If aggression and leather defines an all American rock band, then I guess we agree. The original idea of the eagle in the logo came from a cheap belt buckle that Vega owned. It was a pewter belt buckle that had an eagle in the middle. Who would have thought that a cheap belt buckle could have led to 1000s of Ramones t-shirts? I guess that's rock n roll!
