As the economy turns sour, music memorabilia collectors are constantly looking for new ways to expand their collection without breaking the bank. From concert programs to ticket stubs, there have always been low cost music memorabilia items to expand a collection, but more and more, collectors are discovering a new type of music memorabilia.
Music action figures have recently been gaining more and more popularity with music memorabilia collectors worldwide. At initial glance, it would seem that a number of the rock music figures on the market today are just another child’s toy, but this is certainly not the case. In fact, collectible music action figures can (and have) increased substantially in value. For instance, a small toy company named SEG Toys released a set of My Chemical Romance action figures in late 2005 based on the pop / punk rock band. Shortly afterwards, the company went out of business and these figures were selling on the collector’s market for more than ten times their original value. That kind of money isn’t child’s play! You can read more about these particular pieces of music memorabilia in
this article from early 2007. This is just one example, but there are many other examples of these little pieces of music memorabilia skyrocketing in price!
Supply Shortages of Music Figures Drive up Collectible Values!Due to the fact that a number of music action figures are manufactured by very large toy and action figure companies like Mcfarlane Toys or NECA, the assumption by music action figure collectors is that the figures are widely available and that the supply will certainly outlast the demand. This is just not true! Although it is true that a number of popular music figures are made by large toy companies with huge production and distribution capabilities, many of these companies cater to the music figure collector. They do this by offering an initial production run of a certain music figure and then retiring the figure forever. For example, Mcfarlane Toys, known for their long list of collectible
Elvis action figures, typically doesn’t manufacture more of an item once it is sold out. This typically means that a certain music figure is widely available for about a year after the initial release, but soon becomes a highly sought after piece of music memorabilia. This is certainly true of a number of Mcfarlane music figures like the Mcfarlane Toys Slash action figure based on the legendary rock guitarist, their KISS action figure box sets, and
Beatles Cartoon action figure box sets. In addition to the large action figure manufacturers, there are a number of small companies that are realizing the value of music memorabilia collectors as their customers. For example, a small Chicago based company named Locoape released their first music action figure in 2007. It was a stunning depiction of Motorhead front-man Lemmy Kilmister. The
Lemmy figure was released to rave reviews from action figure collectors and Motorhead fans alike. From the bass guitar accessory with real strings to the wart on the Lemmy figure, it was a hit! As of 2009, the figure has showed strong sales at the retail level and it will be interesting to see how this company caters to the collector’s market in the future.
